1st Annual Kinetic Derby Day Saturday April 21, 2018 in West Columbia, SC on Meeting and State Street.
Mark Plessinger, Owner of Frame of Mind brought the idea of the Kinetic Parade to West Columbia in order to bring more arts and creativity to the community.
Kinetic Derbys are found in Philadelphia, Baltimore and the West Keys.
A Kinetic Parade is a parade of sculptures that look as if they are moving by motors or electric but it is all human powered.
Kinetic Derby Day contains 3 major elements.
Parade of Kinetic Sculptures starting at 10 am at S. Lucas Street.
Soap Box Derby races for adults and kids on meeting st beginning at 11 am.
Art, mechanical science activities and family fun on state street.
Kinetic Sculpture basic guidelines
Must be human powered no motors, or stored energy.
Can include a costume rider on a bike or skateboard.

Basic Guidelines for Soap Box Construction
Must not exceed 8 ft in length.
Must not exceed 175 lbs without rider.
Must have working breaks and steering.
Must past safety inspection with the pit crew.
Must have a tow hook in the front and rear because the cars will be towed together at the end of each heat.
All riders must wear helmets, elbow pads, knee pads, and close toed shoes.
No flame throwers or grenade launchers.
All soap box cars $25.
Soap box commercial $25 (any vehicle with a corporate logo or name).
Parade entry single rider $20.
Parade entry multi rider $35.
Parade commercial entry $100 (any float with a corporate logo or name).
Soap box start line on meeting st at Brookland United Methodist Church.
Competing soap box cars will report to the pit crew in the church parking lot.
There will be bleacher in that area for people to watch from the House of Raeford start line.
There will be an announcers tower near the start line calling the races.
Prizes will be given out for speed, creativity, and best wipe out on the main stage on State St.
The artist pavilion is hosted and organized by Jasper.
In Addition to innovative artist the pavilion will display the most creative sculptures form the kinetic parade and visitors will vote for the people’s choice award.
Kinetic Derby Day is partnering with a boys and girls club of the midlands together they will provide interactive stations related to mechanical science.
The kids area will also host soap box derby racing for young children in the derby cars which were produced for the national soap box derby completion in Ohio.
Registration is currently open.

Interested parties are advised to start creating their kinetic float or soap box car as soon as possible.
Proceeds from Kinetic Derby Day will benefit the city of West Columbia Beautification Foundation and River Alliance.
Tips for making your derby day construction affordable
One check with the Bike Collective for free parts (wheels, pedals, etc.)
Corrugated plastic is a great building material and is available in 4x8 sheets for $25 at Flag and Sign.
Recycled bottles, plates and a hot glue gun are great ways to give you vehicle a custom look.
Research soap box derby videos on YouTube for how to build and other great ideas.
