What is a Kinetic Sculpture?
It is a human-powered 3D representation of your interpretation of your favorite literary character or book. Bring your imagination to life using pedal power, as an individual or as a team. A team may include multiple members on a bike with themed costumes or multiple escorts in costume riding or walking along with a sculpture that includes kinetic movement.
Rules:
1. Sculptures must have wheels or moveable legs, at least one gear, and be able to move forward, stop, and turn.
2. You must be able to keep up with a 3 mph minimum speed.
3. Sculptures must be able to stop safely and quickly. Sculptures that do not pass the brake safety check will not be allowed to compete.
4. All pilots must wear approved helmets. Please bring your own.
5. Sculptures must not pose any danger to anything/anyone around it or near it and must not have open flames. The pilot must be able to escape quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.
6. Participants are not allowed to consume alcoholic beverages prior to or while operating the vehicle.
7. All Participants must be in an appropriate costume. This is a family-friendly event. Therefore, the City reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of costumes.
8. Sculptures must be no larger than 8' 6" (102 inches) wide, 8' high, and 18' long. A variance may be given with special permission from the parade coordinator.
Kinetic Sculpture Parade & Obstacle Course Race

After the parade, at 1:30 pm, gear up for the solo Obstacle Course, open to participants aged 13 and older, where you can equip your kinetic sculpture to tackle challenges like the "Green Slime," "Foam Surprise," and the thrilling "Water Obstacle." It's a day filled with skill, creativity, daring, and unforgettable experiences!
Soapbox Derby Race & Obstacle Course Race
Experience the ultimate Kinetic Derby Day in West Columbia, SC, by participating in both the soapbox derby race and the exhilarating obstacle course. The soapbox racing kicks off at 11 am, allowing teams of up to 5 to register their derby cars. Choose to build either an art car or a need-for-speed car, and compete for exciting prizes while embracing the cartoon theme by dressing up as your favorite characters. Enjoy an exhilarating soapbox race down a massive hill, featuring outrageous vehicles like rocket ships and giant rubber ducks, reminiscent of the "Little Rascals." Then, at 1:30 pm, gear up for the obstacle course, a solo showdown of speed and precision open to participants aged 13 and older. Equip your soapbox car with pedals to conquer challenges like the "Green Slime," "Foam Surprise," and the thrilling "Water Obstacle." The Kinetic Derby Day in West Columbia, SC, offers the opportunity to participate in the parade in two exciting ways. You can register as a group, where you showcase one sculpture on a bike while other participants dressed up in creative costumes walk alongside the sculpture. Alternatively, you can opt to dress up and hop on a bike as a single rider. The event welcomes all cartoon characters, encouraging participants to bring their favorite animated personas to life in imaginative forms for a truly memorable and artistic procession.
Soapbox Derby Race (Only)

Each car can include pedals to help conquer the challenges. As you race down the hill, you'll encounter the legendary "Green Slime" obstacle, testing your control and nerve on its slippery neon-green surface. But that's just the start! Navigate through the whimsical "Foam Surprise," filled with twists and turns amid fluffy foam, and then take on the thrilling "Water Obstacle" for an aquatic adventure. With each obstacle more thrilling than the last, this soapbox race's obstacle course is a true test of skill, daring, and determination. Gear up, strap in, and get ready for an unforgettable race!
