What is a Kinetic Sculpture?
It is a human-powered 3D representation of your interpretation of your favorite literary character or book. Bring your imagination to life using pedal power, as an individual or as a team. A team may include multiple members on a bike with themed costumes or multiple escorts in costume riding or walking along with a sculpture that includes kinetic movement.
Rules:
1. Sculptures must have wheels or moveable legs, at least one gear, and be able to move forward, stop, and turn.
2. You must be able to keep up with a 3 mph minimum speed.
3. Sculptures must be able to stop safely and quickly. Sculptures that do not pass the brake safety check will not be allowed to compete.
4. All pilots must wear approved helmets. Please bring your own.
5. Sculptures must not pose any danger to anything/anyone around it or near it and must not have open flames. The pilot must be able to escape quickly and safely in the event of an emergency.
6. Participants are not allowed to consume alcoholic beverages prior to or while operating the vehicle.
7. All Participants must be in an appropriate costume. This is a family-friendly event. Therefore, the City reserves the right to determine the appropriateness of costumes.
8. Sculptures must be no larger than 8' 6" (102 inches) wide, 8' high, and 18' long. A variance may be given with special permission from the parade coordinator.

Obstacle Course
We are officially allowing pedal power to the obstacle course. So if you want to include your soapbox car or kinetic sculpture just be sure your build abides by both sets of rules and you can participate in both.

Kinetic Derby Day Overview
On Saturday, April 22, 2023, the fourth annual Kinetic Derby Day will return to Meeting and State Streets. This year, we are excited to announce the return of the kinetic sculpture parade to kick off the day, followed by soapbox racing, and the obstacle course.
In addition to our Kids’ Zone, brought to you by the Boys and Girls Club, iMAGINE has joined us bringing a STEAM festival with demonstrations and even more hands-on experiences. As always, the event spurs creative thinking, competition, and family fun as teams come together to build unusual vehicles and awe-inspiring art installations.
The day begins with a kinetic sculpture parade, at 10 AM, followed by soapbox cars taking over the massive hill on Meeting Street to race in adult and children divisions. After the traditional side-by-side soapbox race ends at noon, an obstacle course comes on to Meeting Street for more intense soapbox racing. Awards are given for the best sculpture, the fastest car, and the best soapbox car design.
At the bottom of the hill, you’ll find a food truck rally and West Columbia’s Interactive Art Park hosting an artisan market. At the corner of Meeting Street and State Street, you can’t miss a Giant Slide that will be sure to bring a crowd. On State Street, you’ll find the iMAGINE STEAM festival with interactive science fun and the Kids’ Zone with exhibition soapbox racing for the little ones.
The mission of Kinetic Derby Day is to inspire creative problem solving, build community pride, and showcase our growing community welcoming economic investment. The event is intended to inspire creative thinkers and help develop problem-solving skills to construct the ideas imagined.
